Friends of the Libraries

The Friends of the Eastern Shore Public Library is a 501(c)(3) membership organization created to support library programs through fundraising and activities in the library and the community.

First founded in 1961, the Friends have provided invaluable volunteer support to the library in Accomac for many decades.

The Friends deserve our thanks for their work to make our regional library strong.  In 2005, the revitalized Friends began  efforts  to improve the deteriorating library building in Accomack by raising funds for roof repairs.   In 2006, the Friends and the Library Trustees began to discuss the need for a study of library services on the Shore as a whole.  In 2007 the Trustees engaged Dr. John Moorman, a respected library consultant, to compile this report.  One result of Moorman’s recommendations was that the Trustees began to discuss the possibility of a new Regional Library to replace the too-small, deteriorating facility in Accomac. This led to the creation of the Eastern Shore Public Library Foundation.

Today the Friends of the Eastern Shore Public Library is a dedicated group of volunteers. They  assist with library events and raise funds for library programs and the purchase of new materials. The Friends run a very successful shop for donated books in a room just off the lobby of the new Parksley building.
